Your Houston Dentist at Dassani Dentistry now proudly offers a new procedure, the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST™) to treat receding gums in a way that is less invasive and offers quicker recovery.
What is gum recession?
Gum recession occurs when there is loss of gum tissue at the gum line. Gum recession can happen because of periodontal disease (also gum disease, gingivitis, periodontitis). This can also occur as part of the aging process, or because of harsh brushing habits.
Causes of Gum Recession
One of the most common causes of gum recession is periodontal disease. An active infection in the mouth can destroy healthy tissue and wear away the gums. Some people, however, develop receding gums because they are using the wrong tooth-brushing technique, are habitual tobacco users, or have misaligned teeth. Hormones, genetics, and poor dental hygiene practices can also increase the risk of gum recession.
Common Signs of Gum Recession
One of the first signs of receding gums is tooth sensitivity. If you notice that your teeth become sensitive when you eat and drink hot and cold items, you may have exposed roots that are causing discomfort. If you can feel a notch forming at the gum line with your tongue or your teeth look much larger than the others , you may have some degree of gum recession.
Keys to Preventing Gum Recession
Taking good care of your oral health by coming in for regular checkups and maintaining a consistent brushing and flossing routine can protect gum health and reduce the risk of gum recession. Making sure you are using the right tooth-brushing technique and refraining from grinding or clenching your teeth can also help prevent receding gums. Some patients benefit from wearing a night guard or correcting their misaligned teeth to reduce their risk of gum recession.
Why should I be concerned about gum recession?
When there is recession of the gums, the result is that the root of the tooth can become exposed. When this happens, decay can more easily occur in these areas and beneath. Healthy gums are critical for oral health, and we want all of our Houston dental patients to have happy, healthy smiles!
What is the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST™)?
The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST™) offers a less invasive way to treat gum recession. Where traditional techniques involve a scalpel and sutures, more pain, and longer recovery, the PST™ does not use scalpels or sutures. This technique and its tools were created by Dr. John Chao.
How is the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST™) different from gum grafting?
Gum recession treatments traditionally utilize donor tissue or grafts in order to rebuild the tissue along the gum line. The new tissue would be sutured and joined to the existing tissue while the gums heal. This treatment is effective, yet the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST™) provides a better experience for the patient.
How is the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST™) performed?
During this procedure, a small hole in the existing tissue is created using a needle. Next, a special instrument is used to gently loosen the gum tissue, expand, and slide the gum line to the proper placement on the exposed structure of the tooth root. With the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST™), there are no incisions, grafts, or sutures, as it utilizes the existing tissue.
What are the benefits of the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST™)?
There are many benefits to Houston dental patients with the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST™). First, there is less pain and discomfort following the treatment, as well as faster healing time. There are also no sutures, grafting, or donor tissue removal from your palate. Finally, the results of the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST™) are natural looking and long-lasting
