TMJ/TMD

A Simple Solution for a Complex Problem

Do you clench and grind your teeth? Do you suffer from frequent headaches or migraines, or jaw pain and stiffness? You may be one of millions of Americans suffering from TMJ or TMD, and you may not even realize it. Thankfully, Dr. Meghna Dassani has a simple solution to not only treat your pain, but prevent it!

What is TMJ/TMD?

And what the heck is TMJD!? We know acronyms can be confusing, but the truth is, all of these acronyms really mean the same thing. TMJ stands for the temporomandibular joint, or the jaw joint. TMD stands for temporomandibular disorder, and is used to describe any dysfunction of the jaw joint. And someone decided they should combine the two to make TMJD (temporomandibular joint disorder) just to make things confusing. Really, these are all used to describe the same thing – any dysfunction, disorder, or condition affecting the jaw joint – but we’ll stick with TMD here for simplicity’s sake.

TMD is characterized by:

  • Teeth grinding & clenching (bruxism)
  • Jaw pain & stiffness
  • Jaw popping, locking & clicking
  • Chronic headaches & migraines
  • Chronic myofascial pain (face, jaw, head, neck)
  • Ear pain & ringing

Oral appliance therapy

If you’ve been living with chronic myofascial pain, or oral health problems caused by TMD, Dr. Dassani offers a simple solution with oral appliance therapy! Oral appliance therapy is essentially a mouth guard that you wear during sleep to prevent the clenching and grinding that is causing the tension in your TMJ, and causing your pain. Oral appliance therapy is a non-invasive, affordable, and convenient solution that has changed many of our patients’ lives by eliminating their chronic pain.

Disclusion Time Reduction (DTR) therapy

Disclusion time reduction (DTR) therapy uses T-Scan™ digital occlusal analysis data to measure the level and timing of bite force on your individual teeth, as well as the stability of your overall bite. The occlusal analysis from the T-Scan is combined with electromyography (EMG), which evaluates the nerve cells in muscle tissue. The nerve cells transmit electrical signals, which the EMG translates into verifiable data. The data allows Dr. Dassani to identify the precise component or components of your mouth and jaw that contribute to your TMJ/TMD discomfort. DTR, T-Scan, EMG, and Dr. Dassani’s knowledge and skill all work together to allow accurate, effective treatment and diagnosis of your TMJ/TMD pain.
